CPR Certification Requirements for Dental Hygienists in Maine


Maine is a unique and special state, and it’s one of the states that has recently seen a surge of support for online-based CPR certification in recent years.

  • Dental Hygienists in Maine are required to have a Healthcare Provider level CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • The Maine Board of Dental Practice requires Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR, AED with practical skills component.
  • Most employers will require a Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR.
  • Dental Hygienists are able to claim continuing education credits for BLS/CPR Certification from these nationally recognized qualifying agencies;
 

Course Content


Dental Hygienists in Maine need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Dental Hygienists may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.



Delivery Method

Dental Hygienists in Maine are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that usually includes a practical skills evaluation through a classroom or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not always accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits.

Some employers may require a specific type of training or may leave it up to the state’s requirement. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

The Maine Board of Dental Practice requires Healthcare Provider level CPR certification with practical skills component that is accepted by the Board, AGD/PACE, or ADA/CERP approved.

Board Statement:

C. CPR certification; BLS certification; ACLS certification; PALS certification

No more than 3 credit hours of CPR certification training completed during a license term will count towards meeting the requirements of this chapter. Online CPR trainings are not accepted unless the licensee can verify hands-on participation with the instructor as a component of the training. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification training meets the requirements of the CPR certification requirements.

No more than 6 credit hours of ACLS or PALS certification training completed during a license term will count towards meeting the requirements of this chapter. Online ACLS or PALS trainings are not accepted, unless the licensee can verify hands-on participation with the instructor as a component of the training.

  1. The American Academy of Dental Hygiene;
  2. The American Dental Association’s Continuing Education Recognition Program (“ADA CERP”);
  3. The Academy of General Dentistry’s Program Approval for Continuing Education (“PACE”);

142 Medical emergency training and CPR
Training to ensure appropriate action in the event of an unexpected injury or illness occurring during dental treatment or within the dental office. Training topics may include medical emergency prevention; development of an action plan, recognition of patient distress and emergency drugs and equipment.
