Who Is Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Training Best For?

The adult and infant first aid/CPR/AED training program is best suited for professionals who need to be certified in these life-saving skills to meet employer requirements.

If you are often around adults and children or infants through the responsibilities of your job, the adult and infant CPR certification program will teach you the skills you need to care for the various age ranges of the people you encounter on a daily basis.

If, on the other hand, you do not spend time around children and infants, clarify your CPR training requirements with your employer. A CPR certification that focuses on adults may be a more efficient and applicable option.

Likewise, healthcare professionals will likely benefit more from completing a BLS program geared towards adults or all age ranges as these programs teach more advanced skills for experienced healthcare workers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do CPR on an infant?

Yes, if an infant is not breathing and if you cannot feel a pulse, you can perform CPR.

However, there are significant differences between how to safely perform CPR on an infant compared to an adult.

If you hold a job in which you are often around infants or if you have an infant in the family, we highly recommend completing an adult and infant CPR training program in order to learn the proper techniques and differences for different victims.

How is infant CPR different from adult CPR?

Performing CPR on an infant is different from performing CPR on an adult. For example, rather than using both hands on the infant's chest (as you would with an adult), you will use two fingers to apply pressure.

The placement of your fingers will be different, as well. With adults, you want to apply compressions between and in-line with the nipples. On an infant, you will apply two-finger pressure just below the nipple line.

Another important difference is the compression depth. On adults and children, your goal is to press down to a depth of 2 inches. With infants, however, you want to stop at 1 ½ inches.

Is it safe to use an AED on an infant?

Yes, AEDs are designed to be used on adults, children, and infants. However, there are different protocols and settings for infants that you need to be aware of.

AEDs are manufactured with adults in mind, but there are pediatric settings and pads that can be used for anyone under the age of 8 years old or who weighs less than 55 pounds.

If you are around infants in your personal life or work in an environment around infants, familiarize yourself with the different procedures for adult and infant first aid/CPR/AED or complete an adult and infant CPR and first aid course.

What does AED stand for?

AED is an abbreviation that stands for automated external defibrillator. An AED is a portable device often found in workplaces with a large number of employees or where some degree of physical risk is involved.

Used in cases of cardiac arrest, an AED is used to restore a normal heartbeat to the heart. It works by delivering an electric shock that stimulates an electrical impulse in the heart’s muscle tissue.

The AED was invented in 1947 by Dr. Paul Zoll while studying at Harvard Medical School and working as a medical resident at Massachusetts General Hospital.

According to the NIH as of 2018, approximately 1,700 lives are saved every year by people appropriately using AEDs.
